The Rose of Sharon-Shrub or Tree, It Will Be the Queen of Your Garden

If you're looking to give your garden a more tropical feel, or you even just want to add a little splash of color, you can't go wrong with a Rose of Sharon tree. Also referred to as Hibiscus syriacus, this tree has been called a plant, a shrub and a bush in addition to being called a tree.

The debate over whether Sharon is a tree or a regular plant may be due to the fact that the tree, depending on the variety you select, may be pruned into a tall tree or may be left near the ground as a shrub.

How this tree achieves its status and title as a tree is through pruning. Each Rose of Sharon tree begins life as a shrub and is cultivate through careful and decisive pruning and planning to become a tree with one main trunk. The best time to cultivate your Sharon into a tree is during its first two years.

While many will refer to the plant as a shrub or bush, it can grow to heights of more than eight and even ten feet tall and can even achieve a spread, or width, of four to six feet.

The Rose of Sharon tree is deciduous, so for those gardeners seeking an evergreen plant that will produce color throughout all seasons of the year, this plant is not the way to go. Deciduous plants and trees lose their leaves and flowers in the fall and winter months, leaving the plant entirely bare until the next spring. This also means that this particular plant, beautiful and lush while blooming, does not make an effective privacy hedge, unless you only wish to have privacy during the late spring months and throughout the summer months.

If what you're looking for is an ample splash of color during blooming months, there's no better way to make your garden king of the neighbor than with this queen of the flowering trees. The blooms on the Rose of Sharon tree may come as white, red, light blue or lavender and many of the trees have what are called "double blooms".

But to achieve the beautiful blooms and long-lasting life of this tree, you must plant it correctly. This means providing full sun and well-drained but moist soil. Without full sun, these trees will likely fall victim to fungal damage or root rot, and will ultimately die.

If you take excellent care of your Rose of Sharon tree, it will live a long and beautiful life, offering you multiple layers of blooms each spring and summer. Planting and filling the garden of your dreams--one that will knock your neighbors' socks off each time they walk by your home, is possible, as long as you are willing to take the time to choose the correct plants and truly build your plant kingdom with queen trees like the Sharon and other complementary plantlife. This plant isn't hard to find.

Tips For Growing Climbers

This article is about climbers and vines and how they can not only be a beautiful addition to your garden but also very practical.

Vines are almost without equal in the beauty of the floral displays they produce. They can be used as screens, wall coverings, decorations for structures like pergolas, the list is endless. You get so much bang for your buck with vines because they only take up a small amount of garden planting space since they grow outwards from a single trunk. This leaves you plenty of space for other plantings in your garden.

Some vines need no support as they use suckers to cling to the surface they are growing on. Some vines have aerial roots whereas some others twist themselves around a support structure and require a trellis or wire (examples include wisteria). Most vines are easily trained and are typically fast growing (apart from the aforementioned wisteria!).

If you are short on outside space then vines are perfect. You get a big display, often with a scent without too much intrusion on your small plot.

Vines offer more than just decoration. They can provide privacy and shelter from the elements. A simple trellis covered with jasmine will become a beautifully fragrant privacy screen very quickly. If you are planting a vine for shade from the summer sun then you might want to consider a deciduous variety so that your shady summer spot is not too cold in winter. Even without such specific requirements most people have an ugly wall that would look better with a floral covering.

You are not restricted to the summer months for blooming vines, winter bloomers are also available. Mixing the varieties in your garden is a good way to get year-round displays. If planting together, pick vines that grow at about the same rate and to a similar size.

In terms of siting and care, most vines like full sun sites. If you live in a cold climate then give evergreen vines a sheltered south facing spot. You don't need to do anything special with soil, just enrich it with compost and if it is well-drained soil you should not have any problems. Most vines in coastal areas do not need watering as the rainfall should be enough. Evergreens should be kept moist. One thing you must not overlook is pruning. Do this once a year; spring-flowering vines should be pruned after they bloom whereas summer or autumn-flowering vines should be pruned in the winter. General tips include checking your support ties regularly to ensure they do not cut into the stems. Also if you know that a vine will require staking, do it when you plant the vine so you do not shock the roots later on. If you need to access a wall that a vine is growing on you can create a removable plant screen, perhaps by planting a suitable twinning plant and have it grow over a removable wooden frame.

Hopefully this has given you a good overview of how you can introduce beautiful flowering vines into your garden.

Roses And Your Landscape

The more you understand about any subject, the more interesting it becomes. As you read this article you'll find that the subject of Choosing roses for landscape is certainly no exception.

Sometimes the most important aspects of a subject are not immediately obvious. Keep reading to get the complete picture.

Roses have long been a favorite among all types of gardeners, and roses continue to enjoy great popularity today. In addition to their beauty as cut flowers and in bouquets, roses are among the most useful and attractive flowers to grace the landscape of any home.

As a matter of fact, the exterior of any home can be made more graceful and more inviting through the use of wonderful landscape roses. Choosing the right ones, and ensuring that they compliment the overall style of the home, is very important to the overall success of the landscape.

Fortunately, the number of ornamental landscape roses make finding them an easy task. The difficulty consists of choosing the right ones from this variety. There are a number of classes of roses whose characteristics make them great for use as landscape ornamentals. For instance, the gardener who wants to grow roses up and over an archway or a trellis may want to use tall growing tea roses. Tea roses are renowned for their nodding blooms, therefore all who pass under the arch would be treated to the beautiful sight of roses in full bloom.

To accent a wall or other permanent structure, a true climbing rose is often the best choice. True climbing roses can be trained to many different effects, including climbing up the length of the structure, or accenting the tops and sides of a wall or building.

The Polyantha or modern day Floribunda rose is a great choice for gardeners looking for a vibrant splash of color for the background. These popular varieties of roses have large sprays of blooms, and they are popular choices for providing color in the landscape.

If roses are to be planted in front of other plants in the landscape, miniature or low growing China roses are a perfect choice. Roses can even be used as hedges, with modern Shrub roses and Rugosa roses being excellent choices.

Of course, as with any aspect of gardening, color is an important consideration. After all, every gardener's goal is a garden full of colorful, vibrant and healthy plants. Fortunately, roses come in so many shapes, sizes, textures and colors that there truly is a rose for every gardener.

The goal of choosing the best color roses for the landscape should be to compliment the color of the surrounding landscape. For instance, a spray of plain white tea roses can be striking against a dark red brick home, or an arrangement of pink roses can be the perfect compliment to a stone or marble entranceway. With so many colors of roses to choose from, it should be easy to find colors that compliment and enhance any decorating scheme.

One popular trend in the world of landscaping is to use a variety of different plants and flowers in the landscape. Whereas single species landscaping was in vogue a few years ago, most of today's gardeners like to use a mix of different colors, species and styles of plants. Doing so not only makes for a vibrant garden, but it is thought to enhance the health of the soil as well.

Fortunately, roses lend themselves well to this mixture, and roses can be a beautiful part of an overall landscape of plants and flowers. In addition, there are roses suitable for a variety of climates. Choosing the best rose varieties for your specific climate should mean fewer pesticides, few disease issues and an overall healthier garden.

Don't limit yourself by refusing to learn the details about Choosing roses for landscape. The more you know, the easier it will be to focus on what's important.

Spring Planting your Flower Garden

As warmer weather starts to prevail over the southeast, everyone wants to get a jump on spring and start your gardens and flowerbeds. Preparing now is a fine idea, however don't go and buy those plants just yet, or you will be buying more to replace them.

The average frost date for western North Carolina and north Georgia is April 21st, and don't think global warming is a factor, as the southeastern United States is one of the few areas of the world showing cooling over the 20th century. There has been no significant change in the numbers of frost days or the frost-free season in the south.

So before you dive into planting take a few tips from me. If find that perfect healthy plant for your garden you can't pass up, keep it in the pot and find a sunny window in your home to keep it healthy until the frost risk passes. If it is root bound, you may want to find a bigger pot first. Be careful not to place it over the heater vent as that will weaken and dry out the plant. Keep it watered just enough to sustain it. Over watering can, actually be worse to the plant than under watering it as wet roots tend to rot.

If you feel you must get plants in the ground and you are not sure the last frost is behind you, consider perennials, as many perennials tolerate frost and can be planted in early spring. If you plant your annuals too soon and another frost arrives, you can pretty much expect to lose them. Annuals just can not take frost. If you are not sure the difference between the two, first check on the labels of the plants or ask your retailer.

Another important tip is to plan your garden. If it is a flower garden you want, make note of the area you plan to put it. Is it sunny, (at least 6 hours of sunlight a day), partly sunny, or shady? Different plants take a different amount of direct light. Shade plants such as hostas or ferns will burn their sensitive leaves in direct sun; the more shade the better for these decorative plants. Asters, Bachelor Buttons, Hollyhocks, Lupines, Marigolds, Geraniums and Snapdragon are just a few sun loving plants that need all day sun to really complement your garden. Again usually, you will find a guide on the plant when you go to purchase it. Follow the guide lines and select plants suitable for the area you plan to plant.

The single most important thing you can do for your new plants is soil preparation. Dig and loosen the soil 3 to 6 inches into the ground then add your choice of organic material such as manure, peat moss, or compost and mix well with the native soil. If moles are a common problem in your area, try putting a couple of moth balls in the hole, but be aware that moth balls are toxic to pets, if you have a dog that digs in your beds it may be better to try and plant your mole sensitive plants in big pots and just bury them in the ground.

When grouping plants together keep in mind their watering needs, some plants love moist soil, others prefer dry. For a trouble free garden, plant in groupings that compliment each other. Once you have planted, be sure to mulch well. Mulch will aid you in keeping those pesky weeds from taking over.
If you really want long term enjoyment out of your flower garden, heed this advice. Take a half hour a week to weed. Keeping up with the weeding will help make it not seem such a chore. Also, take the time to pinch your wilting blooms by nipping the stem between your thumb and forefinger. This will give your plants a compact, bushy quality. Use this time to really look at your flowers and appreciate their beauty, this way not only are you assisting the plant but recharging your soul.

A little common sense can go a long way when creating a beautiful flower garden. And with careful planning you can enjoy it for years to come.

Choosing Garden Flowers With Vibrant Colors Blooming Throughout the Year

Many of us love having gardens that are full of flowers, herbs, ornamental shrubs, trees of different types and lushly growing grass. While we have the grass covering almost the entire garden with trees and shrubs planted here and there for shade and effect, we will definitely have our garden flowers growing in beds that have been prepared for them.

When we are planning a flower garden it is necessary to remember that some flowers grow for certain seasons only. For this reason you should decide how you want the many garden flowers to bloom. This means that you can plant a mix of annuals like Alyssum, Baby’s Breath, Snap Dragon’s, and Impatiens with some perennials.

These perennials can include flowers like Columbines, Daisies, Foxglove, Iris, and Lavender. These of course a just a few ways that you can have your garden flowers laid out in flower beds. Some gardens will have the garden flowers laid out in a color scheme. For instance there will be flower beds that feature only purple colored flowers like the Butterfly Bush.

Among the other purple flowers you can have climbing vines growing over an ornamental trellis. This way a flowering wisteria can add a dramatic background to your purple flower bed. For further effect you could mix the purple garden flowers with green and silver colored foliage to highlight the effect these garden flowers have with the different colors that are around with them.

Your garden flowers don’t have to be confined to flower beds only. You can plant these flowers in large tubs where the various flowers will look good as they are mixed in a splash of coloring. There are some people who like to plant orchids in containers to give their garden’s an exotic and somewhat tropical look.

For gardens that are in southern warm climates it is entirely possible to have exotic flowers like parrots beak and monkey’s tail flowers as part of your garden flowers. These flowers can be mixed in with your ordinary garden flowers in a variety of styles to make your garden a place to relax in.

Sometimes people plant certain garden flowers with their herb and vegetable gardens as well. This is due to the fact that some of these flowers can be considered as edible plants. Begonias and nasturtiums are among the edible flowering plants. As these garden flowers are edible they are also great plants to let kids start their gardening desires with.

When you look at the many different garden flowers that you can buy for your home you also realize that having these garden flowers planted in your garden is also a great way to have vibrant colors blooming right throughout the year.

Planning and planting a flower garden

A bouquet of flowers can brighten your home. Similarly, a well-stocked flower garden can add brightness and color to your lawn or garden. A well-stocked flower garden can provide a bouqet color for your table or shelf, or a gift for clarifying some other day.

First, you want a good location for your flower garden. Most flowers usually need 6-8 hours of direct sun every day, although there are some flowers that grow in shady areas. You will have to match the flowers to the amount of sunlight that the flower garden will receive. Your garden flowers also should be easily accessible for watering, weeding, cutting and flowers.

Perennial vs. Annual

You must decide if you want to plant annuals or perennials in your garden, or a mixture of both. Year as snapdragons, zinnias and other flowers grow, bloom and die in one growing season. Perennials On the other hand can grow and bloom, year after year.

Fall Bulbs

Fall bulbs are planted in autumn, such as daffodils, tulips, and crocuses. These bulbs are planted in autumn, and then grow and bloom in early spring when the weather gets warm. Onion is another giant of flowering bulb like them, planted in the fall, and produces large purple flowers in early spring to midsummer.

Spring bulbs

Spring bulbs are planted in early spring. Some of them are planted just before the last frost, while others are planted after the last frost. Bulbs as Gladiolus are spring bulbs to be planted as soon as two weeks before last frost. These bulbs can be planted every two weeks to provide flowers all summer. Spring bulbs produce flowers from early summer until the first frost in autumn.

Seeds

flower seeds are easily available at your local garden center or even occasionally in your grocery store. The seeds can be an inexpensive way to plant a flower garden. Some seeds require that they start in containers inside before putting them outside, and some can just start planting right in your flower garden. Just follow the instructions on the seed packet.

Plants

Your local garden center will have a wide range of flowering plants do well in your area. If you want some instant color to your flower garden, buy plants that are blooming or just about to bloom. Then, each 2-4 weeks, can return to the garden center and select a few flowers are in bloom. In this way, you'll have flowers blooming in your garden the growing season.

Once you've chosen your place for your garden and the plants you want, you need to organize your garden. As you sow, take into account how big the plants will be when they are full size. You will want the shorter plants in front and taller plants in back. You also want to consider the colors of the flowers. You may want to group flowers of similar colors together, or you may want to plant plants in contrast close to each other.

Growing cut flowers in your flower garden is not difficult, but it takes some ideas and planning, and of course a bit of work. But the end result worthwhile. Will have a rich and healthy bed, and cut flowers for bouquets all summer.

Jumpstart Spring Garden - Gardening Tips for March and April

Call bells daffodil on small buttons. Natural light is a bit longer. The snow recedes and the robins are returning. The big melt has begun. There is no denying the signs. Spring is just around the corner.

If you're like me, you can not wait to get their hands on the ground. While you are holding at high temperatures, there are many things you can do today to boost spring planting season.

Sow seeds indoors

Take a trip to your local nursery or home store and buy seeds to start indoors. In March I like to start annual flowers for my pots and containers. Today, I Coleus, Zinnias, Impatiens, Petunias and marigolds germinate. Follow package instructions seed and get excellent results. Some plants will take longer than others to bloom or fruit, so plan accordingly. This is also a good time to start culinary herbs and vegetables. If you're looking for something new this year, try vine or moonflower cathedral bells to climb a fence or trellis. Both can be started from seed. If you have children, involve them. Many children have a natural affinity for gardening. It's a great quality to stimulate and encourage them.

Powder Birdhouses

I put my aviaries out in early March. Small birds, such as activated charcoal housing search appropriate to raise their families. Mine were for less than 24 hours before the home visits began.

Give Your Garden Tools Reviewing

Take your shears and other cutting tools to your local hardware store for cleaning, lubrication and good sharpness. On a hot day you may want to evaluate lawnmower. Take it to service line or far as you can. Many centers lawnmower repair flooded shortly after the start of the season. It is a tool that does not want to be without.

Get Inspired

Order your garden catalogs. Buy your favorite magazines garden. Here in the Northeast, there's nothing like winter to remind me how valuable my summer garden is space. Create a wish list of new plants, design features and garden furniture. With a little planning, you will not be overwhelmed when May rolls around.

Find out Indoor Gardening Events

In March there are countless indoor garden, flowers and gardening exhibitions. If you can not find anything in your local area, a day or weekend trip to a flower show may be just what you need. Look for a botanical garden or arboretum with indoor facilities. In my area we Longwood Gardens. It features indoor gardens during throughout the year and shows are fantastic.

Clean Your output Beds

As soon as the snow melts and allows the time, you can clean your beds. It is a good time to rake and clear the plantation areas of dead branches, leaves and debris. I like to crush as soon as possible in the spring, while there is much space between plants emerging beds.

Learn a landscape design software program

There are many low-cost programs available currently landscaping software, many of them less than $ 50.00US. During the winter months will have much time to learn how to operate the system.

Create and test new designs before digging. Enjoy overheads and 360 degree views. Many of the programs that offer a stroll through 3D function. It simulates the experience walking through a real garden. You can also advance the timeline garden in the future to see what it will look like when the plants and mature trees. It is a wonderful creative tool to beat the winter blues!

Call your gardener Now

If you are planning to use a professional gardener this year, sure to schedule their work as early as possible. When the soil is soft enough to dig, landscapers will be working overtime to keep up with volume.

Book Tours Now your garden

Scour the Internet for local garden tours and regional levels. Find out when tickets go on the sale and plan ahead. Many times I have read lists of ads in the newspaper after I made other plans. There is nothing like visiting other people's gardens for encouragement and inspiration.

I hope these suggestions motivate you to take action. The sooner you start working in your garden plans, more time will to enjoy the rest of the season. Happy Gardening!

Tips For Successful Planter Boxes

Finding someone who doesn't like flowers is like finding someone who doesn't like sunshine. The uplifting and beautiful colors and blooms brought on by the multitude of flower species are what makes planter boxes so popular, especially in urban centers where green space is scarce. It's not only flowers that people plant, though. There are some incredible edibles that you can grow easily at home in your window sill or freestanding planter boxes. What exactly should one plant in these mini-gardens? Herbs, vegetables and flowers tend to flourish in this environment. Here, along with what types to plant are a few helpful hints on how to do it. So even if you're guilty of killing everything your butterfingers touch, there's hope yet to turn you into a green thumb.

For starting out, herbs are practically foolproof and their smaller sized plants fit perfectly in compact planter boxes. Place them indoors, outdoors, in most any kind of sunlight. It's hard to mess these guys up. As a starter, try your hand at cilantro, basil, chives or whatever your favorite spices are. There is absolutely zero comparison between the taste of dull, store-bought dried herbs and fresh from the garden herbs. And if you've bought fresh herbs from the grocer, you know how expensive they are and how quickly they wilt in the fridge. The best part is, once the weather turns cold, smaller planter boxes can be brought indoors for yearround fresh herbs.

If you'd like to try your hand at something a little more substantial, consider the possibility of fresh vegetables. In general, planter boxes, especially the kind that hangs from window sills, are not large enough to accommodate vegetables. However, there are some freestanding boxes available on the market that are larger in size and can fit smaller plants. Tomatoes and some pepper varieties like banana peppers and jalapenos work well in confined spaces and under varying degrees of sunlight.

Flowers, though by far the most fun thing to plant owing to their endless color and variety combinations, can also prove the most tricky to aspiring gardeners. A good thing to do is plan ahead what flowers to plant where so when they grow you have aesthetically pleasing patterns and colors. What also goes well with flowers are bits of green foliage mixed throughout for added contrast and leaf patterns. When choosing between perennial and annual flower types, it's really up to personal choice, and many people plant both. Also, if you're interested in the Japanese practice of Feng Shui, placing red flowers by the front door brings harmony and good fortune.

When you get to the flower nursery, don't be overwhelmed by the multitude of types, their meticulous care instructions, etc. Just remember what flowers and plants require what amount of sunlight, depending on where you place your planters boxes. Also, the biggest rookie mistake is to overwater plants. Read the instructions that come with each plant and you'll be blooming in no time. Here's a quick cheat sheet on what perennial flowers work best where and with what plants.

For flowers that grow in shaded areas, choose from the following:

Periwinkle, Phlox, Sweet Pea, Viola, Astilbe, Bleeding Heart, Blue Bells, Daylily, Geranium, Lily of the Valley, Trillium, Peonies, and Trinity Plant.

For a greener touch, pair mainly with a variety of ferns and Hosta. Ivy and Moss also prefer this environment

For Partial Shade:
Begonia, Bleeding Heart, Columbine, Daisies, Daylily, Foxglove, Geranium, Lily of the Valley, Peonies, Phlox, and Roses

Partial shade leafy plants:
Ferns, Hosta, Snow-on-the-Mountain, Wintercreeper and grasses

For all-day direct sunlight:
Aster, Baby's Breath, Black Eyed Susan, Blue Bells, Carnations, Daisies, Delphinium, Lavender, Geranium, Hibiscus, Iris, Lily, Mums, Peonies, Phlox, Poppies and Yucca.

Plant with:
Hosta, Hens and Chickens or various grasses

Some plants and flowers, including phlox, hosta and peony appear in each category of the list. That's because they thrive in practically every amount of sunlight. Novice gardeners may want to start out planting these heartier varieties before moving onto more time and care-intensive flower types.

An Introduction To Flower Gardens

Becoming familiar with the general planting and maintenance requirements perennials and annuals is essential to the long term success of your flower garden. The Following are a few guidelines which will help your flowers bloom and remain healthy for years.

Begin with the garden's basic necessities. Your flower garden must have an adequate supply of water and nutrient rich soil. The proper amount of sunlight light or shade is also critical. Any lack of these basic necessities will negatively affect the health of your plants.

Add compost and peat moss to sandy soils to increase the soil's ability to hold moisture. Clay soils require the addition of sand and compost to provide adequate drainage. Compost is important in any garden since it provides your plants with nutrients. Be sure to water the flower garden more frequently during dry spells.

When planting your flowers be sure their planted at the existing grade of the garden. Flowers planted too high or too deep will often perform poorly. Also, make sure that you don't pile soil or mulch around the plant's stem. If you do, water will drain away for the plant rather than sinking in.

Plant perennials and annuals together in the same garden. Perennials are those flowers which bloom and grow larger year after year. After growing during the spring and summer, they die back to the ground each winter only to reemerge the following spring. Annuals grow and bloom for only one season. Perennials generally are classified as early, mid or late season bloomers. Iris, for example, blooms in the spring. Once its finished blooming it provides lush green foliage. Annuals bloom all season long; from spring until the first frost. Planting a variety of perennials and annuals ensures a colorful garden all season.

An occasional application of liquid fertilizer over the course of the season will help your flower bloom longer.

In the summer the main task in the flower garden is deadheading. Deadheading is the process of clipping off spent blooms. This won't encourage many new blooms in perennials but will keep the garden looking fresh all season. With annuals, however, deadheading will encourage continuous blooms all season. Don't discard the spent blooms in the garden as mildew and other plant diseases may spread throughout the garden.

Cultivating is another important garden task. Cultivating the garden soil is a job which serves two purposes. It keeps weeds from taking hold in the garden and allows water and nutrients to reach the plant's deepest roots.

Know the difference between the good insects and the harmful ones. Many incest are beneficial to the garden. Butterflies, beetles and bees are important since they pollinate the garden flowers. They fertilize plants through unintentional transfer of pollen from one plant to another. Most flowers rely on insects for survival. Beetles, bacteria and other microorganisms assist the garden by turning dead plant material into compost. This enriches the soil and creates the nutrients which plants require. Other insects like lacewings, ladybugs and dragonflies are natural predators of more harmful insects such as aphids.

Proper garden planning and maintenance are essential to a healthy flower garden. Flower gardens, though easy to care for, require some maintenance. The work put into a garden is worth the effort, however, as they provide years of colorful blooms.
