Planning your outdoor space
When it comes to our homes, most people spend most of their time indoors. Because we much time inside, this tends to be where we spend the most money decorating, cleaning, and maintenance of our homes. The living room outside our homes is often underutilized, if not completely overlooked. Most houses have some sort of outdoor space that can be used for rest, relaxation or recreation. This space can vary in size from something as small as a balcony of an apartment, acres of land around the house. Whatever the size, outdoor living spaces can be a great extension of our homes, especially with proper planning.
When designing an outdoor space, must first ask why you want to achieve with the space. What needs be filled? What will? If you are designing a deck or patio, by example, the size of the space should be determined based on how you will use. Will you buy outdoor furniture such as a sofa in bad weather, loveseat, and chairs? Or is it simply a dining area with table and chairs? Some families want to have the two sitting and eating in their areas of outdoor space, which obviously requires more space.
Once you know how you want to use the area for the next thing to consider is how often we will use the space. If only be used in the summer, outdoor area can be fine. If you want to use it in the spring and fall, you may want to select a location that is sheltered from the sometimes cold spring and autumn winds. For areas with mild winters, a room of the fourth season would be a good choice. Four rooms season often have windows with removable panels for consideration on a porch in the summer and an enclosed room in the winter.
You may also want to consider going to use the space. For example, if you have young children or grandchildren, a pool can not be a good option as it can be very dangerous. Or, if you have pets that will be using the outdoor space, so you may not want to plant a garden full of delicate and exotic plants that the dog or cat can dig.
Once you've answered these basic questions, you are ready to consider things like structure, privacy needs, and furniture. Observation of other homes with outdoor living spaces is a great way to get ideas. This can be accomplished with just a walk around the neighborhood, or driving in their city. You may want to take a notebook to jot down ideas as you see them. Many resources are available through books, magazines and the Internet. There are many cheap software that can help you design your outdoor living space. Be sure to keep the architectural style of your home in mind during the design phase to ensure an outcome consistent.
Outdoor structures in the form of pergolas, trellises, and arbors can add to your space when incorporated into the overall design. A large pergola on a patio can provide much needed shade during the hot summer months. In addition, pergolas, trellises, pergolas and a great way to display climbing plants such as Clematis, morning glory, or Boston ivy.
Everything that your final choices are, make sure your outdoor space to suit your needs. A good plan thought out in advance ensures you will enjoy your space for many years to come.
