Planting grapes offers the gardener so much more than the simple pleasures of gardening and digging in the dirt. Pruning Is Important

Because of the way grapes grow, pruning is an essential maintenance task during the growing season as well as during the dormant season.  When properly pruned, your grape vines will have one thick stem and two primary branches trained along the trellis. Each year new shoots, or canes, will support the development of grape clusters. New shoots must be clipped constantly to maintain the integrity of the grape vine growing structure.

Grape production will begin in the first year or two of planting. By the third year after you plant your vines, the grape clusters should be developing nicely on your young vines.

Allow the Grapes to Ripen Naturally

Grapes do best when fully ripened on the vine. A taste test is an easy way to tell if the grapes are sweet. If you want to be precise you can test the specific gravity of the grapes with a hydrometer. You can purchase a hydrometer at your local wine making store. A specific gravity of 1.1 indicates a fully ripened berry with sufficiently concentrated sugar for great wine.

Planting and harvesting your grapes will bring you much pleasure for many years and investing a little extra time to get the grapes settled in the first two to three years will bring you many rewards in the future.

Picking Up Where Self Pruning Leaves Off

Lots of heedless home owners believe that trees prune themselves and they should just leave it at that. Of course, they are quite right, too. Nature does see to it that trees shed members that have become excessive or shaded out or badly damaged. The forest floor is strewn with kindling wood. But the very fact that Nature does so provide only proves that pruning is necessary. Without question, man can do a better job.

When a tree "prunes itself the resultant stub, or an open scar on the parent member, seldom heals entirely unless it is quite small. Left as an entry for insects or fungus is an exposed area of inner tissues through which invasions will spread for years to come. Through such lesions the tree loses moisture by evaporation, or takes in water where it does not belong, causing decay. The only perfect seal is scar tissue, called callus in trees, put out by the cambium layer. Man's surgery can help callus growth close over more quickly and surely than in Nature's casual sloughing-off process.

To some people unfamiliar with them, trees are mysterious to the point of being untouchable. Many a new owner, aware that his tree is a living organism, flinches from cutting any part of it as he would from operating on his child or even his dog. Trees are much more rugged than dogs or children. They feel no pain, and they will survive a few mistakes. Coupled with some understanding of tree physiology, good intentions can soon be translated into good results.

It is not suggested that home owners go up into their big trees with ladders and ropes. Leave the high work to professionals. But by learning, with your feet on the ground, to prune your young trees and mature ones of the smaller species - say, up to fifteen-footers - you can increase and insure your property's value at small cost. All your trees will take on new interest and meaning for you. A light labor of love today will reward you through many tomorrows. If wielding tools does not suit you, study the art and teach it to a helper. Plenty of people "prune" their own trees with a bamboo pole for a pointer.

Let proper tools be the beginning of your new wisdom. Unless you mislay them or let the neighbors borrow, one set can last you a lifetime. You may as well start with the best.

Pruning shears, the kind with heavy-duty blades so opposed that they cut closer on one side than the other. They should be at least eight inches long over-all, with broad handles for a firm grip. Ladylike "snips" are only frustrating. If your arms and fingers are short, get shears with long wooden handles. Take a fair-sized branch with you into the store and settle for no shears that will not make a half-inch cut without effort. The kind without reopening springs is least prone to rust shut. Painted red or orange rather than green, your shears will be found sooner when you drop them into grass.

Tastes differ in handsaws - straight-blade or curved - but one rule prevails for all pruning saws: at least six teeth to the inch. Coarser gauges tend to rip and tear on cuts of less than four inches, which is what most of yours will be. The so-called "speed" saws are for professionals in a hurry. For home-owner use, a 15-inch curved blade with metal or plastic grip is ideal. Good tools, such as a nice handsaw, will pick up where self pruning leaves off.

Caring For Teak Deep Seating

Teak deep seating is an attainable luxury that brightens up an outdoor living space and conveys elegance and sophistication. But teak isn't just a great looking material; it's one of the most naturally durable and maintenance-free hardwoods known to man. So even though you may pay more upfront, it evens out on the back end with all the money you'll be saving from not having to restore or buy new patio furniture down the road.

The Wood

Indigenous to the monsoon forests of Southeastern Asia, teak is hearty enough to withstand warm and humid climates. The Class 1 hardwood is very heavy, but what are really special are the natural resin oils the tree produces. These oils protect it from insects, rotting, warping and cracking, in essence working as a synthetic sealant.

However, to say that teak requires zero maintenance would be incorrect. Teak deep seating requires much less upkeep than other types of hard and softwood, but some measure of care should be taken. For instance, outdoor furniture can be oiled up to a few times a year to help bolster the natural oils. Indoor teak deep seating requires less oil because the wood will retain more of its natural oils when not exposed to the elements. Also, leaving teak untreated will cause the wood to fade into a natural patina gray, though this in itself is not harmful to furniture. Not only do sealants keep this from happening, but it also darkens the shade of the wood. In general, the darker the stain, the more protection from the sun can is achieved. Two coats of sealant are usually adequate for most teak deep seating, but be sure to let each coat dry before applying another. For mild stains, a soap and water mixture should work, and for harder stains and mildew buildup, try water and bleach. The best thing to do when you're not using your wood patio furniture is to either cover it with waterproof tarps or bring it all indoors.

The Cushions

One recognizable characteristic that sets apart teak deep seating from other teak furniture are the cushions that go along with the wooden seats. These cushions are made from durable waterproof, tear-proof and spill-proof material that's meant to hold up well outdoors and in any kind of weather. Typically, cleanup is a breeze. Simply wipe off spills with a damp rag. Once again, for stronger stains that have set in, soap and/or bleach mixed with water is recommended. Also, like the seats themselves, cushions should be brought indoors when they're not being used. For one, they're easier to store because they take up less room than an entire chair or lounger, and second, it will keep them looking like new for years to come.

Teak deep seating can be tricky to navigate if not approached in the right way. Not enough care, and the wood will fade and break down over time, especially when kept outdoors year-round. On the other hand, too much care (or in this case, over-oiling) will cause the wood to turn black. But if a happy balance can be achieved, you'll never need to buy another set of patio furniture again.

You have researched the benefits of having an indoor garden and found the best plant for you home now what do you put it in? Not only do you want to choose a pot that looks good in your home but you want one that is the best size for your plant too.

You want to look at the long-term growth expected in the plant you have chosen and use that information to pick an appropriately sized container. If you pick a pot that is too small your full-grown plant the roots will not have enough room to grow and the plant will be come "root bound". This is a rectifiable condition with re-potting, but it can put the plant through unnecessary stress and creates more work for you. Your plant may look unbalanced at first in a container that is out of proportion but you will be glad you thought ahead as the plants continues to grow.

The container you choose needs a form of drainage too. The most common method of drainage is one or more holes in the bottom of the pot to let excess water drain out. If you have chosen a pot that does not have these holes there you still have two options to provide drainage. You can put your plant in a smaller pot with drainage holes and then place the smaller pot inside the larger one with no holes. Or place an inch or two of gravel in the bottom of the container before you put in the soil. The gravel will allow the excess water to run through the soil and into the rocks instead of staying in the soil and water-logging the plant.

The bones of the feet are protected by dense fibrous tissue called plantar fascia, which extends from the heel to the toes. This cushions the feet whenever we walk or put weight on them. If, for some reason, tears or inflammation develop in the heel pad due to constant tension from running, jogging or dancing, the planter nerve becomes irritated and inflamed. This is plantar fasciitis or the painful heel syndrome, which is marked by mild to intense pain at the back of the foot, especially when weight is placed on the heel.

Plantar Fasciitis usually develops gradually. Heel pain may only occur when taking the first steps after getting out of bed or when taking the first steps after sitting for a long period of time. If the plantar fascia ligament is not rested, the inflammation and heel pain will get worse. Other conditions or aggravating factors, such as the repetitive stress of walking, standing, running, or jumping, will contribute to the inflammation and pain.

The traditional remedies for plantar fasciitis include stretching the calf, massaging, decreasing one's training, losing weight, purchasing better-fitting shoes (with a raised heel and arch support), icing the sore heel, and taking ibuprofen. Another treatment option, also known as one of the easiest, is using heel seats in your shoes. Heel seats pick up and re-stretch the plantar fascia, redistribute the heels natural fat pad, provide structural reinforcement to the foot, and apply acupressure to relieve the pain while your feet heal.

Climbing up and down stairs, walking or running on hills, squatting, carrying heavy items and walking on uneven terrain all place excess stress through the feet. Decrease these activities by asking your spouse, significant other or friend for help with the kids or carrying heavy items. Avoid multiple trips up and down the stairs at work and home. Limit gardening to flatter more even terrain. Stop running and walking for exercise and try biking or swimming. Avoid the stair stepper, the treadmill and the elliptical machine at the gym.

Keeping up aerobic activity is important and cross training can help. Try biking or swimming. Most walkers hate the stationary bike at the gym, but this isn't forever. Don't drop your heel when you bike and try to avoid standing and climbing steep hills if you cycle outdoors. If you participate in spin classes, you may need to modify the class to avoid further injury to the foot. The recumbent stationary bike may place excess stress through the arch because of the position. The classic stationary bike may be more appropriate.

The Lunge exercise is suitable for stretching both calf muscles. The gastrocnemius (the main muscle in the calf region) is stretched by keeping the heel of the back leg on the ground. The front leg goes well forward, keep your balance; stay tall and in this upright position, lean forward until the stretch is felt on the straight back leg. “Placing the front foot flat on a chair, the soleus (the smaller muscle in the calf) can be given an extra stretch. Push the bent knee forward with the hands until the muscle starts to feel a little tight.
