A Raised Garden Bed Design Will Improve Plant Growth

Using a raised garden bed design is a good way to get a lot more space out of a limited amount of garden space. By raising each plant up instead of out, more crops can grow at the same time. Some plants prefer to grow in the raised garden bed design. Plants like squash and cucumbers grow great in a raised garden bed design.

Strawberries, also, prefer the raised beds. If kept in their own space, they will produce large amounts of vegetables and fruit, keeping the weeds down where the plants are. Because the raised beds allow for each plant, there is little to no space for weeds to take over.

Weeds will however, find the space in any garden and they need to be tended to in the same amount of time spent on the garden itself. If left to grow in between the raised beds, they will soon seed and take over the garden. When they are left to grow, they also become tough and sometimes thorny, making it extra hard to remove them.

The best way to get them out is to pick them when they pass the surface of the soil. This is why a raised garden bed design is so useful. When seeing plants that are small but outside of the raised beds, a person doesn't have to wait to see if it is a weed or a plant. Pick anything outside of the raised beds. Wait a little longer to pull weeds in the raised beds just to make sure it doesn't belong there.

Protected Raised Garden Bed Design

If the gardener's home is in the northern parts of the country, a raised garden bed design can actually insulate root systems during the winter. Some plants will return every year and reproduce more fruit or vegetables. An example of this is strawberries. The raised garden bed design leaves soil to insulate the roots. They will come back year after year as long as the people put down a little mulch at the end of the season. The same holds true for rhubarb plants. Take care of them and the person will be rewarded with a new crop every year.

In closing, a raised garden bed design is an excellent way to keep a garden healthy without using any sprays or pesticides. If someone has never gardened with raised beds, this coming year is a great time to begin. Talk to neighbors who might use this design or go to a nursery where the workers are experienced with this type of garden. They will be happy to help a person plan out the space available. Just make sure that the person has a drawing with the dimensions on it and this year's garden will be the best one yet.

Tips on designing your garden

Just as artists and writers get a thrill of creation, so do those who create gardens and landscapes. As these artists I can say is to make your plan before you start working in your garden.

If you have a backyard of any size chances are that you want the design with the same care as you would with the rooms in your home. You want to make it a place where you can enjoy to spend time and feel as if made at home. Small gardens often need to be better designed than the greatest - there is less room for error.

Make a Plan
Do not start to make attempts to improve its irregular landscape - make a plan on paper and experiment with different ideas before making your final decisions and implement them. And not only call his plan "about." Use graph paper, and will do everything in your backyard to scale, so that you know that everything you want in form. While the paper using the chart is the easiest way to make your plans, you can also use the software to do the job. claims to be # 1 U.S. at home and landscape design software. is strictly for landscape and garden design, and includes an encyclopedia of plants.

Coordination is key
Another reason not to do things in a casual way is because it is too easy to get mismatched items outside the agreement. And the gardens and patios are much them better when all parties, the same designs for pots of different sizes, for the same type of bricks to line their paths or flower beds. .

The landscapes are for Life
If you have lots of children - or if there is the possibility that a lot of kids will run around the garden, it is better to design the yard with them in mind. Do not use a lot of fragile items, it is very likely that they are destroyed. Be careful what type of construction used to play - from swings to the sandbox.

And give a thought to his weekly task - to mow. If you have too many big stones or statues to cut everything, we can annoy each weeks as it does the job.

Attracting attention
Expert designers suggest that you always have a "focal point", an object called the attention of a fan, and then be supplemented with all the other features of your landscape. The focal point could be a building in winter or water or a rock garden, or something similar.

Gardens
There are all kinds of gardens - a vegetable garden so you can grow your own food, a garden of flowers add a burst of color to your yard, a rock garden that will allow you contemplate life, or a water garden that can serve the same purpose.

Idea Alley
Visit your local home improvement store and browse through their books on gardening. They'll give you plenty of ideas. But do not stop there. You can find an infinite number of ideas by surfing the web. So take some time, get some kind of attention, and create for itself the perfect backyard.

Gardening Vegetables In Raised Beds - Most Effective For Vegetable Gardening

What does raised bed gardening of vegetables mean? And why would you use this form of gardening? In case you have already seen pictures of raised bed farming, then you would have thought that they resemble large planters which allow the growing of various plants away from the actual ground. Most often they happen to be man made. And it is true, you too can create some of your own with just a little help using wood and planning. This type of gardening has many advantages also.

The Benefits

This form of gardening is beneficial to both the plants you plan to grow and you. One example of how it makes your life easier is that when you grow plants at a raised level then it means you don’t have to bend and crawl all over the garden while doing you’re weeding. It is easier while on knees believe me! This also is a boon for the elderly people who have to otherwise bend and crawl on the garden and it is nearly impossible for them.

Yet another benefit in raised bed farming is that it allows excellent drainage and the plants grow well. There is also the availability of plenty of sunlight. Soil erosion during the rains is a major problem, but only till you adopt raised bed planting. This way all the necessary minerals and nutrients stay in the soil and contribute towards the healthy growth of plants. It also helps to place timbers around this spot of the garden. Because if the water does not drain then it is extremely dangerous for the plants planted there. In raised bed farming the advantage is that this never happens as they are above the ground and water is able to pass with ease. The water retention is perfectly managed and controlled this way.

How to Create One
If a raised bed garden is what you want in your house or gardening area then it is quite a simple process that you have to follow. First create a perimeter surrounding around the area of plantation or where you intend to build the raised bed garden. Normally wood and certain other materials are employed to do this. Place a huge layer of sand at the bottom of the bed to helping drainage of water. The bed can be made short or tall as you like and the depth and the width can remain the same. Pile it up with top soil or clean dirt that contains all the necessary nutrients required to help the growth of plants.

This form of gardening I would say is the ideal way of gardening. Though it takes some time to set up. After the work is done, it becomes extremely easy to maintain the garden.

Planning Next Summer's Vegetable Garden

It's never too early to begin planning next summer's vegetable garden. In fact, sales of greenhouses and seed starting supplies usually begin in late December and early January, and by the end of February, most retailers have a variety of seeds for sale on store shelves. If you want to plant a vegetable garden this coming summer, some advance planning will ensure that you are able to get all the seeds you want before they sell out, and you'll be able to start them in time to have healthy young plants ready for transplant into your garden in early or late spring.

The first part of planning your vegetable garden is deciding what to grow. How much space do you have for planting? Someone who lives in the country and has a large plot of land will certainly need to do more advance planning than an apartment dweller with a small deck or veranda. Remember that even if you're limited by space, there are many types of vegetables that grow well in patio containers. Also be sure to consider your local climate. For areas with longer summers, you'll have more options of plants you can grow, plus a longer season in which to grow them. However, gardeners living in cooler climates shouldn't discount the variety of cool weather vegetables they can cultivate such as spinach, peas, lettuce, potatoes, carrots, and beets. You should also honestly ask yourself how much time and energy you'll want to put into your vegetable garden. If you're someone who works long hours and you're tired at the end of the day, you may not want to spend an hour or two every summer evening weeding and caring for a large plot of land. If this is the case, start on a small scale. You can always plant a larger garden next year, if you want.

Next you'll want to obtain seeds and seed starting supplies. Read each seed packet carefully to determine when to start the seeds. If plants take 2 weeks for germination plus 4-6 weeks before they can be transplanted, and the last expected frost date in your area is May 15, then you should sow the seeds indoors around the last week of March.

Finding a good place to start your plants from seed will be very critical to their early growth and development. An ideal location is a warm sunny window facing south or west. If you don't have such a window, a small indoor greenhouse might be a good investment. Indoor greenhouses can be as small as just a couple shelves that occupy only the top of a table or workbench, or they can be as large as a floor unit, standing four or five shelves high. Small indoor greenhouses can usually be outfitted with heat lamps or grow lamps to encourage germination and rapid early growth of seedlings.

Before transplanting seedlings to the garden, be sure to map out where you're going to plant everything. Pay attention to the space requirements of each vegetable, keeping in mind that some need extra space for air flow around the plant, while others need to be close together to promote pollination. Also remember that you don't have to group all similar plants together. If you have 5 or 6 tomato plants, for example, space them out around your garden, mixing them in with other types of vegetables. Inter-planting crops can help discourage insect infestations and other pests.

Preparing for a vegetable garden requires time, patience, and a lot of pre-planning long before the weather even warms up. These early steps may take time, but the effort you put in now will pay you back dividends over the summer in the form of a bumper crop of healthy produce.

Five Step Beginner’s Vegetable Gardening Guide

More and more people are taking to vegetable gardening these days, and most of them are beginners. So, this brief vegetable gardening guide is dedicated to them. It is a fact that most of the vegetable gardening being done is in the urban areas. To be a success in home gardening one needs to understand some basic facts and be able to make practical decisions.

First of all you need a garden site. It should be in a location exposed to full or almost full sunlight. The ideal soil for vegetable gardening is fertile, well drained and deep. There should be a water outlet nearby and it should be free of competition from any plants or trees nearby. If the soil is made up of clay, adding sand or organic matter will certainly be an advantage. And, while you are working with the soil, do not forget to turn the soil to a depth of 8-10 inches.

The second step is to decide on the kinds of vegetables to grow. Consider growing crops that are highly nutritious. If you have a fence or trellis, locate vine crops close to them. Avoid over planting and grow according to the needs of the family. Selecting the right variety is of paramount importance as the wrong ones might not be very productive in spite of good attention and care.

Third, remember that to be successful in vegetable gardening, proper fertilization is indispensable. The quantity of fertilizer required is dependant on the kind of soil and crops. Clay soils need heavy fertilization as they can absorb and store fertilizers 3-4 times more than loose sandy soils. Sandy soils needs light fertilization more often. Also adding generous amounts of potassium to sandy soil will make the crops grow better.

Fourth, to make earlier harvesting possible, transplant vegetable crops as much as possible. If you cannot, seed directly at a depth that is 2-3 times its widest measurement. Seed them thick so that you can thin them later to the optimum stand. Planting should be followed by watering. Let the water penetrate to at least 6 inches into the soil. Sandy soils needs frequent watering compared to heavier ones. This should be followed by mulching using organic materials.

Fifth, and finally, in the list of vegetable gardening is weeding and pest control. A long-handled hoe will take care of the weeds without using a weed kill chemical that poisons the soil. For pest control make use of natural methods as much as possible and avoid applying synthetic insecticides. But if you really want to use them, follow instructions on the label to the letter.

Hope this brief vegetable gardening guide is of use to you. Happy gardening!

Indoor Gardening Tips for Healthy Plants

Bring nature inside and start an indoor garden to make your home more colorful, but be careful to follow these indoor gardening tips. Plants are so soothing to look at and many indoor gardeners feel that they add that extra little spark to any room. An added benefit is that plants are nature's purifier, taking carbon dioxide out of our air and changing it into oxygen cleansing the air in your home. Mix up your plants; try a few exotics or tropical plants, anything you choose will make your room shine with their fresh beauty and their colorful blooms. To maintain their beauty here are some indoor gardening tips to keep your plants lush and healthy.

Light is the one thing you cannot skimp on. Without this essential ingredient your plants will wither and die. Each and every plant have different requirements so for one indoor gardening tips here is some things to look for when shopping for houseplants. Ask the person at the nursery center how much light the plants you are consider will need. Some plants need direct sunlight while others crave indirect sunlight. For a direct sun plant, place the container near a window that faces south. For indirect plants they can be placed near a window but keep them far enough away so their foliage will not burn. Plants that require little light, like philodendrons, African Violets or ferns, can be arranged anywhere in the room as long as a little natural light filters in.

Indoor gardening tips on watering your plants are always needed. If you over-water your plants you are subjecting them to insects and disease and you will eventually kill it. Over-watering will also rot the roots. Plants hate wet feet. Once you have discussed the watering needs with the nurseryman invest a small amount of money into a water gauge. The gauge will tell you the moisture level of the plants soil. They are extremely helpful in deciding whether to water or not and really only cost a little money, a very wise investment.

Another indoor gardening tip is to fertilize. At the nursery center they fertilized the plants to encourage them to grow so they can sell them to you. If you do not fertilize your plants they will droop and wither. Find out from the center or from the internet what each plants feeding schedule should be. The secret to keep happy, lush plants is to feed them on a regular basis.

You want to keep a close eye on each plant for any pests. If you find pests on one plant isolate it from the rest and treat it immediately. Try not to use pesticides on your plants especially if it is a plant you will eat, like herbs.

A very good pesticide free natural formula for eradication of pests is:

In a jar, combine 1 teaspoon dishwashing liquid and 1 cup vegetable oil. Shake vigorously. In an empty spray bottle, combine 2 teaspoons of this mixture and 1 cup water. Use at ten-day intervals (or more often if needed) to rid plants of whiteflies, mites, aphids, scales, and other pests.

If you follow these few indoor gardening tips you will have beautiful houseplants that enliven every room. Take time to enjoy your indoor garden. Let it relax and soothe you, after all that’s why you planted an indoor garden.

Happy Gardening!

A flat, level surface is necessary for vegetable gardening to ensure that the water will flow evenly, giving sufficient nourishment to all the plants in your garden. If you have an uneven terrain, some of your plants may drown while others might be dehydrated. Good soil is essential as well so make sure that you buy quality garden soil that is packed with sufficient minerals for the healthy growth of your vegetables.

Choosing the type of vegetables you want to plant in your garden is the fun part. There are hundreds of vegetables you can choose from, but make sure the ones you pick are well adapted to the particular environment and climate in your area. Most vegetables are actually very easy to cultivate if you provide them all their growth requirements.

Planning is very important for the success of your vegetable gardening venture. You need to at least have a general idea of where you want to place your different vegetables in relation to each other. Using pots is a good idea so you can rearrange your garden if the need arises. Of course, your options will be limited if you have a small garden space but if you have a large area to work with, your gardening options are limitless.

One more important element that all vegetable gardeners find very important is the elimination and prevention of garden pests. There are many organic pesticides that you can use to solve this problem without inflicting any damage to your crops.

If you have a little more open space at home, you can go for regular home vegetable gardening as well. This is a more structured type of gardening in which you can lay out your garden more systematically than when you are using random containers.

If you live in a cramped apartment or high-rise condominium where there is no backyard to plant in, you have to use your creativity in order to create your own indoor garden. You can use any kind of containers to serve as an improvised garden plot and place this near a window in order to get as much sunlight as possible.

When it comes to productive hobbies, nothing can be better than vegetable gardening. Not only will vegetable gardening provide you with fresh vegetables to serve your family, but it also has therapeutic and relaxing effects on your body and mind. Regardless of what kind of vegetable gardening you choose, planting your own vegetables will definitely be much healthier and cheaper than purchasing them from the local grocery store.arden soil that is packed with sufficient minerals for the healthy growth of your vegetables.

Christmas Window Box - Home Made Christmas Decorations

Among the first things that family and friends see when they come for that special holiday gathering is the outside of your home. Although just about everyone decorates with outside Christmas lights and other decor they occasionally forget about the Christmas plants that could be used to make a beautiful appearance. Window boxes, sometimes called window planters, can be bought at many discount stores or hardware stores. You can also find several online stores that sell window boxes or will custom make the planters to accommodate your needs. Because the windows in homes vary in shape and size, you must be careful to choose the right planter.

Measure the window for the exact width before you order or purchase a planter box. Also, make sure you have the correct hardware to use with your window and planter. Now, choose the theme, design and color you desire. You can either purchase one already decorated or with a specific theme or choose a neutral one to use throughout the year. Since the boxes are usually created from wood, they can easily be painted and stenciled in any way you choose.

The type of plants you choose can vary according to your location and your personal preferences. When decorating for Christmas, selecting greens and reds will keep your decor in the holiday spirit. Hearty cold weather greenery, such as holly, is always a good selection. Adding colorful berries can give that merry color. Many people also prefer to use items such as pine cones for an added special touch.

If your weather is too harsh for live plants or if you just don't have a green thumb, artificial plants can also be used in the planter box. Choose the greenery according to your preferences and make sure to purchase floral foam, wire and tape to secure that the plants in the window box
